Resolving IP to country

I'm trying to modify PHPadmentor to display different ads depending on which geographic location the viewer is coming from. I did a search of the threads in the forums but didn't actually turn up any code examples. Anybody out there who's already solved this problem and is willing to share the knowledge?

Save yourself a lot of trouble, and let the user choose his location.

The IP-to-country mapping is sketchy at best, you have to do quite a few complex (and time-consuming) things to get a result that's half-reliable. Not worth the trouble if you can just have the user choose.
