Most programmers snicker at the thought of coding standards for flexible languages such as VBScript, JavaScript, and PHP.

I am an ASP programmer by day and a PHP programmer by night.
I’m trying to make my PHP code more manageable.

ASP has an “Option Explicit” feature which turns on mandatory variable declaration.

Is there such a feature in PHP? Are there any advantages of declaring your variables at the beginning of scripts?

PHP is essentially a typeless language. There are explicit type juggling functions that occasionally need to be used, but declaration of variables at the beginning of a script is essentially wasted space in PHP

Maybe just go to your php.ini file and set E_ALL for error_reporting. It won't enforce anything, but it'll generate warnings when you do something programatically incorrect like using an undeclared variable.
