Decoding EXIF thumbnail in PHP

if i run this script i get the followin output.

$exif = read_exif_data ("test.jpg");

echo $exif['Thumbnail'];

/ Output /
ÿØÿÛ„ !#"! $)4,$'1'-=-167:::"*?D>8B3796 OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOÿÀx !ÿÄ¢ }!

The question is does anyone know how to decode this thumbnail?

I might be way off base.. but I tried

base64_decode($exif['Thmubnail']);

and it does not produce any output.. just a blank page.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.. kinda seems like a waste to create thumbs when they are already created in EXIF 2.1

OK, looks like the embedded thumbnail is actually a miniature JPEG file itself. All you need to do is create a mini-script that behaves like an image. Example:

//A little script to extract jpeg previews from EXIF tags
//This will only work for this particular flavor of JPEG files (see the PHP docs for gripes on exif standards)

if(file_exists($image)) {
	$exif = read_exif_data ($image);
	if(isset($exif['Thumbnail'])) {
		Header("Content-type: image/jpeg");
		echo $exif['Thumbnail'];
	} else {
		die("Image does not contain a recognized thumbnail");
	}
} else {
	die("Image does not exist or was not specified");
}	

?>

then just refer to this script as an image and pass it image=filename as a parameter.
