recursive regular expression patterns

hi,
i've got a question relating to regular expressions (to avoid using a different, far less elegant way). is it possible to formulate a regexp-pattern that allows to search/match the same pattern within the pattern?
example:
$x="{FOO{BAR}}";
now, i'd like to have a pattern that returns {FOO} and {BAR}. is that possible?

In the DOC I've seen the ?R pattern, but never tried:

((((?>[<sup>()]+)¦(?R))*))

shouldwork for (ab(cd)ef)
