PHP cookies...

I'm trying to make a script in php that enables the user (who doesn't have to be a registered one) to make the simple preference of whether they want the left-hand column to be visible. I knew this will require the use of cookies. So, I tried it, but i just kept coming accross loop-holes.

Is there a dead simple method that I am missing!?
