Select First Three letters

How would i select the first 3 letters of a string?

I tried explode() and split(), but couldn't figure it out. Please help

$rest = substr ("abcdef", 1); // returns "bcdef"
$rest = substr ("abcdef", 1, 3); // returns "bcd"
If start is negative, the returned string will start at the start'th character from the end of string.

Examples:

$rest = substr ("abcdef", -1); // returns "f"
$rest = substr ("abcdef", -2); // returns "ef"
$rest = substr ("abcdef", -3, 1); // returns "d"
