adding values in a column

I know this is a simple question that must have been asked before, but I can't seem to find an answer ... so here goes.

I have price values that are displayed in several rows in a form (as in the case of an order cart). I would like to total them up. How do I do it in PHP?

are they numerical values? if so i believe it is just $valuetotal='$1'+'$2'....and so forth i could be wrong though...

Interactive. Yes they are numerical values. I think my problem is more that I just have no idea about writing scripts. I'd say that my problem is in the declaration ... how do I declare that the first price would be $price[1] and the second $price[2] etc. As far as I can tell, they are all $price. I'm still quite a bozo when it comes to computer languages and have little idea of declaring variables.
