Help with position of text

Hi,
I'm writing a PHP script that requires the output to be in a .dat file which can be downloaded and editied in a word document. I'm familiar with file handlers and the like but can anyone help me with this problem.

I need to display the data over 4 columns which means text positioning using PHP.
example

surname firstname status location

maybe you could read the file as a string, explode the string and assign each piece to a variable. Then create your table and put the variables in the desired location.

I did think of doing it that way, but I thought there might be a way of specifying column tabs similar to creating a pdf file.
Any other ideas

I'm not sure what you do with a PDF file, but you can specify tabs...e.g.

print "surname\tlastname\tstatus\tlocation\n";

Thanks Diego. The tab worked but here's one for you what about specifying a particular size for the type???
