Multliple values from <select>

Hi,

Can anyone tell be whether it's possible to send more than one variable on a submit from a form with a <select> box?

There's nothing in any of my three books on this.

For that, you'd use a menu.

I'm not sure what you mean.

A drop down menu is implemented using the the select tag, and I can't see a way of sending two values from it.

I would use check boxes for that, you display multiple options and send just the checked values which can be more that just a choice.

Thanks, but I'm dumping a database query into the drop down menu so check boxes don't really lend themself to this.

There could be as many as 500 rows in the drop down menu - I want to send two columns, selected from the drop down menu, with each form submit.

I'm not sure it's even possible to be honest.

Maybe you misinterpretted what I said about a menu, you can have a multiple select menubox rather than a drop down menu.

But, I wont go into too great detail, becuase I just happened to read this...

And you expect a user to sit there and scroll through that?

There's a concept that I really fight it out tooth and nail with sometimes with clients, and that's called user experience.

Imagine yourself as a user faced with a drop down menu of ~500 items. Personally, I'd just laugh and click the hell out of there pronto.

I hear what you're saying Van but that's what they want. This is working over an Intranet with very specific info (customer numbers and stuff).

The green screen ERP programs work in a similar way for customer browsing....

BTW I understand your comments about multiple feature but that's for selecting multiple rows - I want to send two columns from one row.

I think I have seen where you can have multiple values from a <select>. You would have to hold down "control" to select more than one, etc. I'm not sure if I would ever have to do this so I'm not sure how it works exactly. Can't you just use more than one drop down? I think I might be confused what you are trying to do.
