Whats wrong with this code?

Hey all,

Ive included the code below, its a simple pop3 checker script, supposed to
check pop mail server, however whenever I try and run it I get either an
inability to connect or a timeout.

Can anyone help?

But, I was smarter than that,
so I checked this:

Which didn't seem right since sendmail is always on port 25.

tried that on telnet...
no connecty.

but...

And now that I actually bothered to run the thing, you've got problems.
It connects ok, but the response it gets is not ok.

Personally, this is something I'd charge for.

Maybe someone else has the time to volunteer on this one, but it looks like it could be a few hours work.

I dont get it. In PERL its relatively easy to do this sort of thing, yet in PHP its near impossible, what gives?

Well it's not PHP here.
The socket connected without a problem after the port number got changed, the problem is that the script is not compatable with sendmail.
Where you get the error is when the script sends out an unknown command "USER $username"
and gets a 500 error for unknown command.

Doesn't matter what language you write it in. If you can't speak the servers jive, your client script will fail.

Uhmmmmm, have you considered using the IMAP extension? It's POP compatible too. 🙂
