variable passing and mail()

Im having difficulties with a email im trying to write....In the $mailcontent i have a link to a page on the site, and a want to pass a variable on to this page (which is a form) so that it can be filled...

It works perfectly if i do,
<a href=blabla.php?REF=4>link</a>

But when I put a $variable instead of 4 it doesn't work....Ive tried to do
<a href=blabla.php?REF={$variable}>link</a>

But nothing works - it passes nothing on to the php script...

Can anyone help?

Sorry about that, it doesn't even work with a value....Here is the code.....

$toaddress = "Ianto_Panto@mac.com";
$subject = "Enquiry from ITEI";

  $mailcontent = "<a href=http://server/~username/pages/authentication.php?REF=4>here</a></p>";

$additional_headers = "Content-Type: text/html";

I have tried putting a php variable instead of the 4, in curly brackets and without...

Are you trying to have something on the client pass a variable back to the script?

All im trying to do is create a link in an email, then the user would click on the link to enter the page, but the link would also pass in a $variable,

REF would be passed into a field...

It's like when you submit a form, you pass on variables, www.yourserver.com/page.php?REF=1

Ok, I think I follow...

In your script that generates the links, insert the variables. Example:

echo "<A HREF=\"www.yourserver.com/page.php?REF=$variable\">Click this for $variable</A>";

could I then use the REF variable in the "page.php", and it will be whatever $variiable is??

BTW - I'm using mail() to mail a message and the link to the user..

i.e
$mailcontent = "<A HREF=\"www.yourserver.com/page.php?REF=$variable\">Click this for $variable</A>";

mail($to, $toaddress, $$mailcontent);

Yeah, when your script runs, $variable will be set to whatever was in the URL
