127.0.0.1 ??

I never could get the Apache server (1.3.12) to run locally on my Win Me machine, until I changed the ServerName from "localhost" to :

127.0.0.1

Anybody know what this is, a port number or something?

Anyway, Apache works fine now, so I can now do all my development off-line. Yea!!! It's only taken almost a year to accomplish this task.

localhost is a DNS name for 127.0.0.1 They are functionally identical. Apache should have worked either way, but you are running WinME so anything goes. 🙂

127.0.0.1 is the IP address of your local computer. Localhost disguises it to make it easier to remember. Something like PHPBUILDER.com could have an IP address of 546.4.2.5.

A year? That is bad. You should try PHP TRIAD that has APACHE, PHP, MySQL and PERL. download it from phpgeek.com

Unfortunately, we are stuck with Microsoft and their beta versions of software.

Bill Gates has reportedly said, "There is no money in turning out quality software." And I guess he should know :-)

I will give him credit, however, for resisting the urge to kick in kick backs (called political contributions) to the Demopublicans. I know some of the Big Boys like Sun and IBM are doing this, ostensibly to convince the INS to open the flood gates to cheap foreign labor (which is partly why I haven't worked since October).

So score one for Gates there. His software may be buggy, but at least it is written mainly by Americans.
