File Problems

I posted a few days ago about problems I was having performing operations on files on my server--specifically renaming files in response to form input. I got a couple of replies (thanks Adam) but I haven't been able to solve the problem yet. A few ideas I'd had... (1) do I need to change the permissions on the directory as well as the files to permit rename? (2) if so, do I need to do this for the whole dir path? (3) if not either of these, then what exactly is the problem? I have checked and php is running as (i assume) nobody:nobody, since that's where apache is running. Help!

If PHP is running as an apache mod (usually as nobody or apache), then you need to set the permissions on the file in question to give apache (nobody) the ability to do whatever operation you need. If you need to write to the file, then the Apache user needs to have "r" permissions set for that file. If Apache has to go into a directory and write a file, you will need "x" perms on the dir and "r" perms on the file.
