Turning off Cookie sessions

I have been working on a project using sessions and I have the session thing down pat except for one thing, cookies. I don't want to use them, yet they are being used anyway.
My host doesn't give me access to the php.ini file so I don't know how else to turn cookie use off. I found the session.use_cookies on this page http://www.phpbuilder.com/manual/ref.session.php
but I don't see how to use that to turn the cookies off.

If you are using IE:
Go to menu and find "Tools", then "internet option", then choose "security" tab, find "custom level..." button, in the next screen, you will find how to disable the cookies.

If you are using Netscape:
Go to menu "Task", then "Privacy & Security", then "Cookie manager", then you will see how to block the cookies.

NOT cookies in my browser.

Cookies in PHP. It is automatically setting a cookie when session_start() is executed and I don't want a cookie. I am passing the SID through the URL, but it is still trying to do it with cookies.

Why do you want to?

Course, if you insist, you could write your own session handler - just like in the days of PHP3.

Try messing around with ini_set(). Specifically,

ini_set('session.use_cookies',false);

And to answer your other question, I don't like relying on cookies, because not everyone has them turned on.

But that's no problem with PHP4's session handlers - if the browser isn't using cookies, then the session handler failovers into inserting the session ID into the URL.

... 'Cos (especially if PHP has enable_trans_sid turned on) if the browser has cookies turned off, PHP's session handlers will failover into inserting a session ID into each URL.
