ImageMagick speed

I've tried Imagemagick to generate web-thumbnails from big pictures (>5M😎, and it takes too much time to produce a thumbnail for the browser. I noticed that it's the reading that takes the time.

Is there any way I can make it faster?

My server has 1.4GHz cpu, 0.5GB RAM, and RH 7.0, so I guess it's not the hw that makes it slow.

Why not create them and save them and not use them on the fly

I tried it already, and I guess it's the only alternative if something doesn't come up.

It just would be nice if I had pictures saved only once on the disk.

Ofcourse that's going to be slow, you're not just picking a few pixels from a datafile, it's processing the entire 5+MB, using all the pixels to create a new image.

Forget about ding this on the fly, write a script that will create all the thumbnails for you, and save them to disk.
