How to strip a URL?

What I need is the ability to display only a portion of the url.

For Example:

$PHP_SELF gives me this:
www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/h1234.php

All I would like to see is:

1234

Does anyone know how I would go about stripping the URL down so that I can echo just those 4 numbers?

As a start, have a look at the parse_url() function

What you do with the results depends on the specifics of what you want to do, but the preg_* functions should see you right.

I am new to PHP so the preg functions didn't make any sense to me. Below is an example of exactly what I am trying to accomplish.

Example URL:
www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/h1234.php

All I would like to echo are the 4 numbers:

1234

How do I get rid of everything else?

You could also use substr() but only if the url is always the same length as:
http://www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/h1234.php
http://www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/h6219.php

$result=(substr("$url", 33, -4));
would give you:
1234
6219

$result=(substr("$url", 33, -4));
echo "$result";

The url will always be the same.

try echoing the url first to see how long it is, then adjust (substr("$url", 33, -4));
http://www.nobody.com/dir/h1234.htm
$result=(substr("$url", 27, -4));
$result=1234;

get the idea !!

$url= $PHP_SELF;
echo "url: $url";

//then you can count how many charcters to subtract form the string

$result=(substr("$url", ?, -4));
echo "$result";
?>

This works, no matter how long the url is:

$url = 'www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/h1234.php';
$result = substr($url,-8,-4);
echo $result;
?>
