formatting in a text area

If I trying to find a list of "formatting tags" that can be used in a text area that accompanies a slide show. The ones I am aware of are:
\n new line
\t tab
\7 bullet
\f box
\x1a left arrow
\x1b right arrow
\10 bullet in box

Can anyone tell me of a list of these "tags" or any that I don't know.

If you want true formatting, you should create a Java applet that has a RichEdit box (I think that's what it's called, it's been a while since I used Swing). It basically has most of the formatting of a word processor: bold, italics, underline, link support, HTML support, etc.
