Passing variables to a text box

I am new to this whole coding situation and I am looking for some help with a little project.

Using the "onclick" command I would like to be able to pass specified text into a text message box, which by the way I have labeled "mesg".

I am looking to be able to click on an image and pass certain characters into the text box.
