Stripping newlines

Hi,

I have the following returned in a form:
$cmt = $HTTP_POST_VARS['comment'];
which is:
Welcome. ... if you see an error or an omission,
please tell us. We welcome your feedback (good or bad) on any matter.

I want to strip out the newlines (but NOT the \" and \') and get a single line of text back to store in a table. ereg_replace might do the trick if I could figure out what to put inside the []'s. All help appreciated.
