FTP without the FTP functions

Okay, I can use fsockopen() to get a pointer to the FTP system. The question is, how would I get it to send a file from one system to another?

Search the net for a page that explains the FTP protocol.

I did. But when I use fputs(), I get an error saying the pointer returned by fsockopen() isn't valid. I checked the pointer, and it's not false. So I have no clue what's going on at all.

Oh, well, guess I'll have to go to the copy function. I hate using that function; it's so unreliable.

Just one more question; is there a way of detecting whether the FTP functions are active or not? I'd really not like to have to go back and rewrite my file uploading system twice when I switch servers.
