getimagesize doesn't work

this is bizarre, sometimes getimagesize works, sometimes not...

when uploading a file it just claims;

Warning: getimagesize: Unable to open 'C:\Root\images2\Photo.jpg' for reading. in /usr/local/site/files/index.php4 on line xxx

any idea what can cause this? the usage is

$size=getimagesize($file)

the upload form field is called $file

help is greatly appreciated.

I doubt this has got anything to do with getimagesize() at all.

First of all, verify that the file actually exists at the time you're trying to open it. The error messages usually do not lie, so if it tells you the file isn't there, it most likely isn't.

Use file_exists() to determine if it's really there. If it is, then you should really start wondering. If it's not, then, well, you have to find out why it isn't there. A couple of hints;

• PHP deletes it from the temp directory, so be sure to copy it to a "real" location before doing any opens, getimagesize()s or similar.

• If you have set a maximum filesize for upload, the file might exceed this, causing it to be deleted.

• Blank characters in filename may cause trouble if you're using $file_name as destination for a copy(), make sure you strip blanks and other potentially dangerous characters (; / \ etc) from the destination filename.

Also remember, unlike Windows, Linux is case sensitive. So pic.jpg and Pic.jpg are not the same.

Known bug on getimagesize: For certain digital cameras that save file directly in JPG format this function does not work. It doesn't work for the images from my Olumpus D-360L.
