for the life of me i can not get htaccess file to work

here is my htaccess file

AuthUserFile /full/path/to/.htpasswd
AuthName "User"
AuthType Basic
Satisfy All

<Limit GET POST>
require user techcorp
</Limit>

i have re wrtien this file so many times
i tired difrent paths
i used htpasswd to create a new password file

htacces is in a sub directory of my public_html

and i have an html file sitting in the dir too

i have a link from my main page to this file
that is sitting in the protected directory

now when o go to this link it takes me to the file
no pop up saying please give user name and pass

ive looked through tons of crash course pages on htaccess

anyone that can spot my problem or perhaps give me some
good links where i can find detailed
info would be really helping me out

You need more than just a .htaccess file

Sample .htaccess file:

AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /path/to/users/file
AuthName "Authorization Required"
<LIMIT GET POST>
require user requireduser
</LIMIT>

Add this to httpd.conf file:
<Directory "/path/to/protected/directory">
AllowOverride all

</Directory>

Stop your Apache server
restart your server
