adding vars

Hey uhm i know this question has been askt before but mine is slightly different.

I want to add vars
Im getting them from my db
here's an example

$total = 2450
$math = -
$value = 250

You see that wat i want is that my math thingy is variabel and it is but uhm when i want to calculate it wont do it..

$total = $total.$math.$value;
it returns 2450-250 ive tried converting them to integers i just dont know why is doesnt do it..
can someone help?

returns, or better echos 2450-250
