download file from server

I've written a script that searches through a database and writes to a file. How can I download this file once its been closed off from the server to the user's computer. I've tried header(content-disposition:attachment; filename=$filename) but this gets executed before any data gets written to the output file. Can anybody help please.

Does the file need to be created on the server as well as downloaded ??

Well, I understood onething that you wanna make a database search and copy the results in to a file. IF I AM RIGHT

is that must to send as attchment or else you can send as txt file file by reading the same contents in the file.

If you could explain me what exactly the user end requests and expects what in return then .....can proceed further.

The script is in PHP . I read from fa flat file database and after getting what I need from that database if do a fwrite to the .rtf file. Once I close the .rtf file. I then want to download this file to the client's computer. The file sits on the server initially, but needs to be downloaded to the client's computer. Hope that makes more sense. I don't want to go down the line of an attachment if I can avoid it
