HTACCESS specific problem

ok first off
"I" am not running apache on a linux box
my server/provider is
and they communicated to me that the httd.conf and every thing else is set up

also i have had help here and there from some ppl with experince on this matter
so the problem is either too simple or very obscure and complex

ok
the PROBLEM:
goal: trying to have security for a directory

the directory

home/nfs/"MY SPACE"/public_html/private

in private i have a .htacces file
and in it is :

AuthUserFile "/home/nfs/"MY SPACE"/pass/.htpasswd
AuthName User
AuthType Basic
Satisfy All //ive tried this and not haning this

<Limit GET POST>
require user ME
</Limit>

i have a file in this directory called

some.html

and up in my public_html dir i have a link to this "priavate file" and the link works... no access pop window.. nothing

so nontheless

i can access these files along with anyone else which isnt cool

any help would greatly be appreciated

This is by basic .htaccess file which seems to work ok

AuthUserFile /path/to/htpasswd/file/.htpasswd
AuthGroupFile /path/to/group/file/.htgroups
AuthName "Test Intranet"
AuthType Basic
<Limit GET>
order deny,allow
require group itstaff
