gzipping entire directories

Hi

Lately I've been experimenting with php's gzip functions. They work great for single files, but I really have no idea how to gzip entire directories, while keeping the directory structure intact.

Anyone know how it's done, or have any ideas?

you fist have to tar the directory and then zip it.

if the directory is mydirectory:

tar cf mydirectory.tar mydirectory

then you can gzip it.

you can do it all in one go too.
tar zcvf i think.

I'm not sure how this works in PHP though
