Anyone to help me with arrays?

I want to gather all rows of data from two columns in a mySQL database. I did this using the select statement "SELECT title, package_number FROM packages ORDER BY package_number ASC".
I can get the data into a PHP array using '$row = mysql_fetch_array($result)' where $result is the mySQL query.

My question for any guru that wishes to help a newbie out is...
How am i able to set each row, or title from a row to a variable. so that i can use them to compare other data with?

instead of 'while', use 'for'

for ($i=0;$i<mysql_num_rows($result);$i++) {
$rows[$i] = mysql_fetch_array($result,MYSQL_ASSOC);
}

now you can play with it as much as you please...
echo $rows[0]['package_number']."<BR>\n";

foreach ($rows as $key=>$val) {
echo $rows[$key]['title']."<BR>\n";
}

I am not sure what you want to do here.

To have each column be its own array:

while($row=mysql_fetch_array($result)){
$titles[]=$row[0];
$package_numbers=$row[1];
}

when that is done you have 2 arrays, 1 for each column. Of course to get data from an array you simply call it with the number.
$titles[0] is a variable for the 1st entry.

oops, here made a mistake:

while($row=mysql_fetch_array($result)){
$titles[]=$row[0];
$package_numbers[]=$row[1];
}

Thanx for your help guys, much appreciated.

What i wanted to do with his was take the input from a form. url encode it, turn it to lower case. Do the same with the elements taken from the database in the array and then try and match the results together.

A kinda cheep 'title search' which would then pass the package_number to another script to be delt with.

Make any sence? am i going about it the right way?

so do something like:

#FIRST TURN TO LOWERCASE:
$VARfromFORM=strtolower($VARfromFORM);

#QUERY THE DB
$result=mysql_query("SELECT title,product_number from TABLE where title='$VARfromFORM'",$resID);

#FETCH THE RESULT
if(mysql_num_rows($result)=="1"){
$row=mysql_fetch_array($result);
$product_ID=$row[1];
$product_NAME=$row[0];
} else {
echo "ERROR: MULTIPLE OR NO PRODUCTS";
}

This will get the product number from the database by the product title submitted to the page from a form.

Thats good, i was thinking about doing it that way or similar. Its easier.

I'm a little concerned about security, isn't this way more susceptible to an SQL injection attack?

I guess i should check for entered characters before all this then.

They have to log on to use this function anyway, so i'm not too worried about it being wHacked.
