Validation for space

Dear All,
I used preg_match function to check whether a filed contains only alpha-numeric charectors like this:

(!(preg_match('/^{[0-9a-zA-Z]*$/',$clinic_id)))}

But how can I check for a validation if an empty space exists in the field? Can anybody help me in this issue?

Do you mean you want to allow empty spaces inside $clinic_id or do you want to ensure that $clinic_id isn't completely empty?

In the first case:

!(preg_match('/^{[0-9a-zA-Z\s]*$/',} $clinic_id)

In the second case:

!(preg_match('/^{[0-9a-zA-Z]+$/',} $clinic_id)
