Image display in php

I'm currently trying to figure where to begine if i want to write a code that does the following: Takes an image from any given area of my site when clicked and places it in a predetermined template written in a mix of my html and php.
Inother words, if i have an image in my newest blog entry, and someone clicks on the image, what sort of script would be needed for php to be passed the image name automaticly, and then display the image in the center of a template page.

I would guess that you need to make the pic an anchor and have the tag read some thing like this:

<a href = template.php?image=xxx><img src = /images/xxx.gif></a>

This way you pass the pic id or whatever you use to uniquely id the pic back to the template page which can then take the variable and concatenate it into the template to show the image.

Two questions about that,
#1. how would I write the image link on the template page so that it can accept the image name passed to it by the preceding page?
#2 how would i write the image link in my blogs so that it is correctly passed to the template page when a user clicks on it?
