Sessions with cookies

I am a little confused.
I am writing yet another portal type system, on my development box at home sessions using cookies work fine, however when uploaded to a remote webserver all links when the initial session is started appear with a PHPSESSID embedded in the url, surely this should be done with cookies?? how can cookies be forced when initialising a session??

Read the function ini_set from manual, some of the values in php.ini configuration file can be reset with that function. Maybe you can reconfigure this situation as you wish.

Found this while trying to study up on sessions:
"I had a hair-raising problem with PHPSESSID parameters automatically added to all URL strings.
I guess it has to do with the --enable-trans-sid compilation option.
