mysqldump not working

I know there are other postings on this subject but I still can't get this to work.

I want to use mysqldump to backup my database. I've practically copied the syntax directly from the book but am still getting syntax error messages. Please can someone help, I'm new to this and can't see where I'm going wrong.

mysqldump PDS >backup/PDS.sql;
