trim string

Everyone,

I have a slight problem that i can't fix myself. I have the following string in the var $self:

http://penguin.intern.wemnet.nl/~zcool/index.php?&menuitem=1&menuitem=1&menuitem=0&menuitem=2

as you can see i have four times the var menuitem and i know the last one will work and that happens to be the right one. What i want to do is to "trim" the string down to:

http://penguin.intern.wemnet.nl/~zcool/index.php?&menuitem=2

Can anyone help me out with this one?

if the values are always going to be similar you could use something like

$newstring = str_replace("
?&menuitem=[0-9]&menuitem=[0-9]&menuitem=[0-9]&"
, "", $self) ;

i dunno maybe ?

this made me think a little.. this will work:

$self = ereg_replace("(\?\&menuitem=[ ]*)([0-9])", '', $self);

thanks for the idea Alan.. This leaves me an other question.. would it be possible to change the [0-9] part in a way that it matches everything till a specific char??

example:

http://host.com/file.php?menuitem=pla%20ap&othervar=value&menuitem=pla%20ap

then i want to remove &menuitem=* (&menuitem=pla%20ap in this case)
from the line..
