ORDER BY problem

I have a page that list my members by name, age, so on. But, when it list the members by name, it doesn't count capitals and lowercase letters the same.

Example print out:

//just the first letter of their name
C | D | J | Q | d |

It does everything right except it puts the lowercase "d" at the very end. How can I get it to put the lowercase "d" in order with the rest of the upercases?

Very strange, I'm testing the same type of query on a table I have with a bunch of names.. it works fine for me..

You can try this though, it might be a work-around, and let me know if you get the same result:

SELECT user_name FROM table ORDER BY UCASE(user_name);

This will force the order by all upper case which might inheritantly fix the problem.

Hey that worked, thanks a lot. I got one more question if you can answer it. I have it sort by district also, and it doesn't display them in any order.

The first name is district 8, then 41, then 35...not in order...

$Query = "SELECT user_name from $TableName ORDER BY user_district DESC";

That another weird thing happening? The only thing that worked before is my ordering by age of people, which I did with and without DESC and it works, and its the same codeing as this district. So I don't know whats going on.

Did you try also selecting the user_district? Ya know I'm not even sure to be honest, but the field you are ordering by might have to be in the SELECT portion of the statement..

I tried that but it doesn't print any name sout on the screen, it only prints the "|" between the names. It seems it should work but it doesn't. When I order the age, it uses the name as the select and it works. This is weird. I'll try and look around for more/diffrent ways to do this. theres got to be a way. In fact, the way I have it "should" be working, very odd. Im going to into my table and look at everything.

What is the field type of the districts?

char(2)

Its the same as the age feild type so I don't see why one would work but not the other.

Char2 on a field thats always a number? Why not use INT?
