Get correct visitor IP - not very ez

I am trying to get the IP address of a page visitor. Here is my code:

if ($HTTP_SERVER_VARS['HTTP_CLIENT_IP'])

$ip_addr=$HTTP_SERVER_VARS['HTTP_CLIENT_IP'];
} elseif ($HTTP_ENV_VARS["REMOTE_ADDR"])

$ip_addr=$REMOTE_ADDR;
}

It returns some ip address (proxy, i'm sure), but not my local. Any ideas?

There's still at least a couple of bugs in it, but I'm getting there.

and you'll get a country code at the end of a page full of debugging information, with any luck.

Thanks - I remember seeing that code somewhere. I checked it out

(2nd page you listed needed a .php extension)

Works nicely, however, it asks for the ip and I need to get that.

I'm using this on my companies intranet, so I think that it is pulling the proxy server address. This is kinda frustrating...

Oops, the second URL is wrong. Try:

http://www.feralchildren.com/input3.php

But if you look at the code at the first URL, you will find a routine to get the user's IP number.

OK I have just fixed the last (known) bug and updated the code at the first URL.

By the way, you should know there are many circumstances in which this won't work. It does handle most proxies and caches, but not all (especially anonymisers!).

You might want to check your getcountry() code; it thinks I'm in the Netherlands.
