Just to check, its fine to include two sql statements in a mysql_query call isnt it? I've seperated them with a semicolon, and it work in the mysql console, but it has no effect through the site.

No, it's not fine. They're two queries.
In the console it works because the semicolon is an "end of query" marker. You type two statements separated by a semicolon, you're actually typing two separate queries.
