HTML formatted mail

Hi all,

I've found some good threads on formatting e-mails on this list, but unfortunately still not quite what I'm looking for.

Not sure if anyone has tried doing the following, but if you have, I would appreciate your help.

I basically have the usual PHP file that outputs the page from a query followed by the mail() function. ie

Header
Body - with queries and output formatted
Footer
mail() - with all the bits and pieces for MIME

Of course this outputs ... blah blah

All I want to do is know how to 'capture' everything between the HTML tags and declare it in $mail_body?

$mail_body="??all the output??";

You know what you can do... you can go like this...

$mail_body = "
All The Stuff Here
";

then go

mail("sending@address.com", "Subjecy", "$mail_body", "From: webmaster@$SERVER_NAME\r\n");

Thanks for the offer of help.

My question is, how do I put " All The Stuff Here " into $mail_body ... other than typing it all in.

I can't really do:

$mail_body="<htm><body>all the text here</body>"; as the output page is not 'fixed' and depending on the user, will be different depending on the output from the sql query.

There must be some way I can 'capture' the output page and then declare it in $mail_body.

I'm a PHP bozo, so bear with me ... what I was thinking I could do was have the entire page as a function or something and that could be declared as an include into $mail_body. ie $mail_body="include output.php'; OR $mail_body=somefunction();

I know my syntax is all wrong in the above and all that will come out in the e-mail is include output.php or somefunction(). That's my real problem ... I simply don't know what I should be doing and haven't the slightest idea where to even start looking in the manual.

I hope my explanation makes sense and there is a solution to my question.

Simple. Instead of directly printing the page, use a variable. Collect the entire thing in one variable, then first print it and after that, mail it.

$myvar = "<head>" //etc.

//do some funky SQL stuff here

$myvar .= "<p>" . $row["field"] . "</p>";
//
// etc..
$myvar .= "";

print $myvar;

mail('recipient','subject',$myvar[, headers]);

That's pretty much the only way I can figure it. It's not much harder than outputting a normal page, you just need to shove it all in a variable.

Thanks for the info Lauri. I did think about doing it the way you suggested, but what I was missing was the .= bit to split the variable. It's working fine now ... a bit cumbersome, but nevertheless doing what it's meant to do. Thanks.
