I have been plugging away at a CMS that I need to develop. I know verry little about PHP except that I like it!

Is there any potential security threats for files on my server other than the ones that I specifically code to be written to that I should be aware of?
Should I keep the back-end off-line, perhaps on the site owners local machine? Would I benefit from throwing the back-end under a SSL directory for an on-line version?
Any help is much appreciated.
