printing line breaks inside textarea

I've been unable as of yet to find a solution to this seemingly simple problem.

I need to write from a file into a textarea, but as far as I know the only way to put a line break in a textarea is to actually have a linebreak in the input text.

I've tried putting "/n", "<br>" , "/r/n" and they just show up inside the text area exactly as I typed them. There must be some simple way to break text in a textarea??

I have a text area that is prepopulated from a database and and there's aline break:

printf("%s\n", $var);

Data goes instead of %s and \n actually does the break. Hope that helps.

No sorry, \n just shows up as \n.... I already tried that...
