Can anyone shed some of their expertise on how to transfer a variable from 2nd browser to the main browser then close the 2nd browser. Is this possible in php? Or do I have to used javascript? I want my code to be purely php...

Nope, not possible with PHP. You could possibly set a session on browser 2 to store the variable with PHP, but you'd need JavaScript to close that window and then force the refresh of the main window to pickup the session var.
