Alignment in query result cells

I have set-up table to show search results from a php search of a mysql database. It works fine but the vertical position of the data in cells is defaulted to centre.
I am have tried to use <TD VALIGN=TOP ……… to set the alignment of results in my cells, but if I use this method it is ignored (prevents my php script from running where ever it is placed with in the script).

I have also tried setting a pseudo CSS class to act on the script but it is totally ignored by the table created by my script. Am I barking up the wrong tree? Can anyone let me know how to set aligment within my results cells?

Try
<TD ALIGN=LEFT> or right if you prefer..

Remember, if you want to mingle HTML and PHP don't forget to exit and enter PHP properly.

For example; if you're in PHP and want to include some HTML you must first exit php with ?>
here follows your HTML code...
<? then back to PHP again

can I stop and then re-start my php just like that?

Yes you can stop and start php even on the same line. i.e.

<TABLE border="<? echo $borderval; ?>" cellpadding="<? echo cellpad; ?>">

The php will be parsed correctly
