automatic file list

I am looking for a way to have a php page read the contents of a sub folder, and build a list of html links for those files. Also to read a description file associated with the target file to display descriptive text about hte file with the link. I am new to PHP and really excited about the potenial of using it. Any ideas of assistance would be much apreciated.
