whole word replacement.

I've been searching here and not found a solution for this.

How can I replace a word of a long string... but just a particular word... not all the occurances of the substring within the text..

Example: "the car is their way of life"...

I want to replace The by PPP having as result:

"PPP car is their way of life"

Should be something with the pattern at the eregi_replace... I know probably an easy thing... but I've not found the way to do it... :-(

Probably I don't get your point.

why not use:

<?php
$text = "the car is their way of life";
$newtest = str_replace("the", "PPP", $text);
?>

Yes you don't get my point...

The solution that you propose does return:

PPP car is PPPir way of life

instead of

PPP car is their way of life (that is what I want)
