Header problems????

I have some php code that executes the following header command and JavaScript. If I comment out the header command, the JavaScript runs....however with the header command active in my code, the php code terminates without executing the JavaScript. Any ideas as to what can be happening here?

Sample Code:

header("Content-Type: " . $file_type);

$msg = "Access Code Entered Correctly...";
echo "<SCRIPT>alert(\"$msg\")</SCRIPT>";

What is the value of $file_type? Because if $file_type is something that the browser cannot understand (like PDF files), then it won't parse it and therefore your JavaScript won't run.

If the javascript is going to put $msg in an alert box, then you have to assign $msg between the <b><SCRIPT></b> and <b></SCRIPT></b> tags.

The header line was hard coded as:

header("Content-Type: image/jpeg" );

.....it has the same result and verifies that the variable contained valid information.

What I can not understand is why after the header execution, is everything, including the JavaScripts that follow ignored and execution of my program is halted.

Any help????
