regular expression help

Hi,

I'm having trouble with a certain piece of regex:

The string may not begin or end with a '-' and must contain at least one letter. So I made this one:

eregi("^{[a-z0-9]+([a-z0-9-]+)?[a-z0-9]+$",$record);}
?>

But now how do I check if it containt at least one letter in the same eregi statement? Can this be done within the same statement?

eregi("^{[-].[a-z].[-]$".$variable);}

should work. I know the eregi isn't as good with the .* as preg. If that fails, try:

preg_match("/^{-a-z[-]$/i",$variable);}
