Does anyone know how PHPBuilder accoomplishes the connecting of parent messages in it's forums to the replies. I understand the basic principle of such a process, but aside from repeatedly querying the messages and looking for additional replies, I cannot see a way to produce the long connecting line to the original message. Here is a link to one such message.

Look at the way the replies are connected. They continue to move over until someone replies to the original. Then every message caries the "i.gif" (the up-down line) at the beginning of it's row, rather than the "trans.gif" which is the blank space. Somehow, at each instance of a message, they have already determined the structure of the overall tree? Surprisingly, this seems more difficult to duplicate in practice than I had previously imagined. Any suggestions?
