Problem with recievin more then one word

When i try to transfer information from one page to another... I use the .php?animal=chicken for the url. but... Im pulling information from a database... When I display the information it shows the entire field with the database. When i try to use that $variable i only get the first word. For example for a recipe called hole in one. When i pull the information from the database it displays Hole In One... Now when I try to make it a link it turns into .php?recipe=hole now how can i pull the entire set of information ... So i can use it in a query... Because I have several that start as Hole. Ok i hope thats clear... sorry for any confusion. Thanks everyone.

and, on the next page:

$decoded = urldecode($variable);

If you have id numbers for recipes in the database, use them in the URL and then search by id.
