exec ( chmod ) in safe mode? Please Help

I'm in safe mode unfortunately. I've been able to chmod with exec() for a file, but it won't let me chmod of a directory. Is there anyway around this? It has to be done on the fly as I am uploading images in a 777 directory with a script and I need the script to change the directory to 755 after it uploads the images to that directory. Please help!

It's not my strongest subject but have you checked whether the directory itself (or the one above) has the correct permissions for what you are trying to do?

AFAIK, you can have permission to write a file in the directory but still not be able to change the directory attributes...
