Faking my IP

I have a huge problem. Someone has sent an email with my IP on it, and I did not send it. Is there anyway they could have bought software or done something to allow themselves to be able to do this? It's important for me to find out, because I think someone is trying to cause problems for me. I have a dozen friends that are mad at me right now. I have nothing to say other than, track it and see where it goes. But, after that.......they don't believe me.

this is more of a computer things than it is a code one... what software do you have?

What do you mean? I have the normal everyday software on my computer.

I do know that there is a software that is supposedly giving people other peoples IP's.

My friend told me he did it when he kept getting junk email from someone.

I want to figure this out.

ummm.. are you a member at any sites? That could be where they got your email... you know you can just visit a page and I can get your IP address... with a very simple php command...

Could a friend of mine gotten the IP, then sent the email with it?

That is kind of what I am dealing with. Someone is using my IP to make it look like I sent this bogus email from a hotmail type site.

Yes, users can "Spoof" their IP address so that they appear to be using one other than their actual one. And further it is possible for them to "Spoof" their IP address with yours. This would create the effect of it coming from your ip address. I assume you are on DSL or Cable modem. They could have also (depending on who your ISP is and assuming they have the same ISP) set their computer to use your IP while your computer was turned off (However most ISP's would prevent this).

It is my work one. I can't remember if we are DSL or cable. I thought my firewall would prevent that.
But if I understand you correctly, someone could spoof my IP number and make it look like theres?

How exactly could that happen. I am very curious and since my reputation is on the line, I am really really wanting to figure this out.
I do shut my computer down when I am not in the office. W
Also, when this was sent, I know for a fact that we were having major issues with our service. Like for one, the firewall was not working. We were getting viruses left and right.

Would that matter
