setting uploaded file permissions

Hello,
I have been living many problems since I encountered that damned safe_mode feature, anyway...

My question is about uploaded files. The permission flags of uploaded files by default is set to rw------, but actually I need it to be set to rwxrwxrwx for public access. I tried umask(0) before any upload action, but it resulted the same as without using umask().
Anyway, do you know any way to cope with it ? I mean to set uploaded file perms to be accessible to anyone.

Have you tried using the chmod() function? It can be found in the manual under Filesystem functions. It would look something like this:

chmod($uploaded_file, 0777);

Yes, chmod might be of use. But I was looking for something different just to get rid of manually running chmod for each file so to cope with whole thing with a single line of code such a single function.

I couldn't find anything except umask(), it seemed like something I need, but I couldn't get a desired result with it.
But in any case chmod seems to be useful. I would consider it if I won't find a thing wortwhile.
