gd vs Photoshop !

Please have a look at two pictures:

As obvious, one is a thumbnail generated by photoshop 6.01 and one by gd in PHP script.
Why is the gd one sooo poor in quality, and yet bugger in filesize as compared to photoshop?

How can i achieve better quality and size by gd?

What version og GD you are using?
Latest version (2.01 I think) does a very good job in creating thumbnails.

It has a couple of new very useful functions like imagecopyresampled and imagecreatetruecolor that will make your thumbnail very good quality.
